The first and the last page of a German newspaper from May 23rd, 2013. On the first page (on the right) the rape of a 17 year old on a playground is reported. The last page speaks of the uproar in Star Trek fandom over the highly gratuitous scene showing Carol Marcus in her underwear.*
Those two things are related.
In rape culture a woman has no voice. A “NO” (or in this case a “turn around”) is willfully ignored, dismissed, or made light of.
This is why talking about the Carol Marcus scene matters.
We do not want Star Trek to be part of the social mechanics that support rape culture, in which male lust supersedes a woman’s right to physical inviolability and right of self-determination.
To have Carol Marcus in her underwear, the filmmakers even ignored the specifications of their own costume designer, Michael Kaplan.
“Now that we’re so far ahead in time from when the TV show was released, I felt that more sophistication was necessary,” Kaplan told Wired. “In the past, [the crew] were all seen to wear their uniform when beamed to other ships and going to other planets. I felt like it was time they had something to travel in, so I created these shuttle suits. They’re almost like a jumpsuit, worn over their uniforms [emphasis added by me] and with little plastic windows so you can see the color of the uniform.”
* Let me make one thing clear, the article didn’t get the point either, their take is that this amount of sex is a first for Star Trek films and that’s what fans and feminists are upset about. To be fair, the male fan interviewed says that using sex in the movie is a symptom of lack of ideas on the part of the writers.
Much has been said about Alice Eve’s underpants, mostly by people far smarter than I am (unless you’re talking about some comments sections where it’s safe to say “far dumber”). But still, I wanted to add my two cents.
Because early on there’s a really brief exchange in our episode where I call…
like do people seriously not get that carol being in her underwear in the movie isn’t the fucking problem
the problems are:
- the writers thinking it was totally ic of kirk to be a disrespectful douchenugget who doesn’t give a shit about looking at carol when she said not to
- aka a fucking…
